Appeals to his office surged 83 per cent last year, jumping from the usual 500-600 cases to over 1,000, reflecting what Hamilton describes as a profound crisis of public trust in politicians and public authorities. His small team of 15 staff and budget of less than £3 million faces "unsustainable strain" from this rising caseload. Halfway through his six-year term, Hamilton remains committed to the view that restoring public confidence in Scottish institutions requires greater transparency, not less, and he continues to challenge government decisions that he believes circumvent meaningful independent review.
