Two students at the University of Mississippi have died in circumstances suspected to involve kratom, an unregulated herbal substance, prompting authorities to intensify enforcement action in the surrounding area. Days after Aidan Hamilton, 18, a freshman from Colorado, and Robert Strang, 20, a junior from Georgia, were found dead, police arrested two smoke shop employees and recovered over 500 units of kratom along with other controlled drugs from a store situated just one mile from campus. The incident has raised concerns about the ready availability of potentially dangerous unregulated substances near student populations.

Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51, and Islam Mohamed, 18, were arrested on charges of possession of Schedule 1 drugs with intent to distribute. Officers recovered not only kratom but also THC cartridges and other suspected drugs from the unnamed retail establishment. The shop's owner, Amer Alowdi, 40, has a prior drugs trafficking conviction and has since departed the country. Although kratom was identified at both death investigation sites, authorities have not yet established a direct connection between the arrests and the students' deaths. The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement, state and federal partners working collaboratively whilst urging the community to avoid speculation and respect the families' privacy.
