ShinyHunters, a data theft and extortion group, told The Register it hacked an FBI employment portal to defend its reputation and demonstrate its capabilities. The FBI confirmed a breach affecting FBIJobs.gov was under investigation, making the incident significant because criminals may have accessed highly sensitive information about current, former and prospective employees.

The group claimed it exploited an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day vulnerability, then accessed FBI-managed AWS GovCloud servers and stole thousands of personnel records. Samples reportedly included home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, job details and emergency contacts; ShinyHunters said it sought no ransom, presenting the intrusion instead as a publicity effort to dispute FBI allegations that it harasses victims and fabricates claims about stolen data.
