Christine Jardine, the Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, has announced she will not stand for re-election after failing to be reselected by her local party executive. Allies said she was being replaced by an associate of Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton, while Jardine said she did not want to deepen local tensions or division.

Jardine, 65, has represented Edinburgh West since 2017, having previously worked as a journalist and Scotland Office special adviser. She chose not to request a ballot of all constituency members and will continue representing constituents until the next election. Party figures praised her work on domestic abuse, childhood bereavement, support for Ukrainian refugees and equality issues.
