Gary Oldman’s scenes were removed entirely from the 1992 erotic thriller Final Analysis because, according to director Phil Joanou, his performance left test audiences wanting more of a minor character. Joanou said viewers’ frustration when the character disappeared disrupted the film, making Oldman’s strong supporting performance a problem for the wider story.

Oldman spent five days filming several scenes with Richard Gere, playing a psychiatric patient of Gere’s character, after previously working with Joanou on State of Grace. The thriller stars Gere as a psychiatrist who has an affair with a patient’s older sister, played by Kim Basinger, who is married to Eric Roberts’ mobster. Faced with reshoots to resolve Oldman’s character arc or removing his scenes, Joanou chose the simpler, cheaper option and later expressed regret that he had not kept the footage.
