Dorset officer under gross misconduct investigation dies after train strike
PC Alex Ayre, a 24-year-old Dorset Police officer, died after being struck by a train near Branksome on Friday morning. At the time of his death, he was under investigation for gross misconduct relating to off-duty behaviour and had been suspended from duty. His death has prompted Dorset Police to refer itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for independent review of how the force handled the matter.
PC Ayre joined Dorset Police in June 2022 and worked in response covering the Boscombe and Bournemouth area. British Transport Police are leading the investigation into his death, which has not been classified as suspicious. An inquest will be opened in due course. His family released a tribute describing him as a "handsome, charming young man" who was "deeply loved and respected" and known for making people feel welcome and bringing laughter to those around him.
