Marillion’s video for “Assassing”, their 1984 single from *Fugazi*, paired a well-regarded song with a confusing spy-themed storyline and rudimentary digital effects. The band themselves have remained puzzled by the result, which stands out even by the experimental standards of early music videos.

Director Simon Milne aimed to use the then-new green-screen technique, but poor lighting meant the images could not be properly superimposed, leaving plain blue or green backgrounds in places. Keyboardist Mark Kelly also criticised the computer graphics and “Jimmy Bond” imagery; the video’s plot shows Fish among suited office workers watching a presentation featuring the band and colour-labelled data.
