Is AppleCare actually worth it for the Apple Watch SE?

Engadget ·

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the Apple Watch SE 3 costs $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and includes accidental damage, battery service and theft or loss cover. Whether it is worthwhile depends on how likely the watch is to be damaged or lost, and how much you would value avoiding repair or replacement costs.

Each accidental damage claim costs a further $69, while theft or loss replacement has a $119 deductible and requires Find My to stay enabled throughout the claim. Battery service is covered only when capacity falls below 80 per cent; the standard warranty already covers manufacturing defects for one year. Three years of annual cover costs about $90, rising to $159 with one damage claim or $209 with one theft or loss claim, against the SE 3’s $249 starting price. The article also notes that Apple’s standalone plan may suit people with riskier work or activities, while AppleCare One is mainly relevant to those already covering several devices.

  • AppleCare+ costs $29.99 a year for the SE 3.
  • Claims still have fees and conditions.
  • Its value depends on your risk and repair costs.

New here? Start with this

AppleCare+ is Apple’s optional cover for repairs and replacement after certain problems. The Apple Watch SE 3 is a lower priced model in Apple’s smartwatch range, and it also comes with a one year warranty for manufacturing defects.

The cover includes accidental damage, battery service if capacity drops below 80 per cent, and theft or loss replacement, but claims can involve extra charges and theft or loss cover requires Find My to remain enabled. Whether it makes sense depends on the chance of needing a claim, the cost of cover and fees, and how much those costs would matter to the owner.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

AppleCare+ may be worthwhile for someone who wears the watch in settings where damage or loss is more likely, or who would struggle with an unexpected replacement bill. For about $90 over three years, it also provides a known route to repair, battery service if capacity drops below 80 per cent, and theft or loss cover, which may offer useful peace of mind.

The case against

The cover can cost a substantial share of the watch’s $249 starting price, and claims add further charges: $69 for accidental damage or $119 for theft or loss. Someone who keeps the watch safe and can comfortably pay for a repair or replacement may reasonably prefer to set aside the premiums, especially as the standard one-year warranty already covers manufacturing defects.
