Former Shetland constable remanded after raping woman and teenage girl
A former Shetland police constable has been remanded in custody after a jury convicted him of raping a woman and a teenage girl, as well as another sexual offence involving the girl. The verdicts concern conduct spanning several years, including offences committed while he was a serving or special constable.
Carmichael John Williamson, 32, was found guilty of having sex with the girl when she was 15 on various occasions in 2014, and of raping her once between 2014 and 2015. He was also convicted of raping the adult woman three times, including once in 2022 when she was intoxicated and unable to consent; five of the nine original charges were withdrawn and he was acquitted of others. Williamson, who denied the allegations and had no previous convictions, has been suspended from Police Scotland since January 2024 and was placed on the sex offenders register; sentencing is due later this year.

Shetland is part of Scotland, and policing there is handled by Police Scotland, the national police service. Police officers, including constables and special constables, are expected to uphold the law and protect the public.
Sexual offences include rape and sexual activity with someone under the age of consent; in Scotland, a person aged 15 cannot legally consent to sex with an adult. Whether someone can consent also depends on their circumstances at the time, including whether they are too intoxicated to make or communicate a choice. These cases matter because they concern the safety of young people and adults, and the standards expected of people serving in the police.
