‘Fourth Wing’ TV Series Casts Emilio Sakraya as Xaden Riorson

Variety ·

Emilio Sakraya has been cast as Xaden Riorson in Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ “Fourth Wing”, joining Esther McGregor, who will play Violet Sorrengail. The casting introduces the male lead for a series based on a bestselling fantasy romance, set at a military college where candidates train to become dragon riders.

The story follows 20-year-old Violet, who is ordered by her general mother to enter Basgiath War College, where candidates face the rule “graduate or die”. The Empyrean book series began with “Fourth Wing” in May 2023 and currently includes “Iron Flame” and “Onyx Storm”; a fourth and fifth book are planned, but their titles and release dates have not been announced. Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean novels are fantasy romances set in a world where young candidates train to become dragon riders at Basgiath War College. The first book, Fourth Wing, follows Violet Sorrengail, whose mother orders her to join the college despite its deadly risks.

Violet’s story also centres on Xaden Riorson, another candidate at Basgiath. The novels explore their relationships and the dangers of training, and the series has continued with Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with two more books planned.

The books have attracted a large readership, and the television adaptation is being developed for Amazon Prime Video. Meredith Averill is the showrunner, while Lisa Joy is directing the pilot.
