Welp, all of you RuneScape folks who hate Reignited have gotten your wish, as the controversial MMO rejig has been cancelled
Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a proposed new character type with its own economy, after existing players reacted negatively to the announcement. The company said it had missed the mark and would not pursue the feature, while stressing that efforts to attract new and returning players must not come at the expense of the existing community.
To fill the planned 2 December release slot, Jagex says it will release the Adventure Guide, the first part of the Remastered Journey and other improvements. A 10-day free trial will run from 2 to 12 December, giving new characters and accounts without active membership since 2 June access to Members worlds and content.

- Other RuneScape updates are planned for 2 December.
- A 10-day Members trial runs from 2 to 12 December.
New here? Start with this
RuneScape is a long-running online role-playing game made by British company Jagex. Players build characters, take on quests and trade items in a shared game world. Members pay for access to extra areas and activities.
Jagex has to balance changes that might bring in new or returning players with the expectations of people who already play. RuneScape Reignited was proposed as a new character type with a separate economy, meaning its players would trade among themselves rather than in the existing game economy.
The game’s community can influence which features go ahead, while Jagex decides how to develop and support RuneScape. That balance matters because major changes can affect how players progress, trade and spend time in the game.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Cancelling Reignited respects the established players who sustain the game and who objected to a separate character type and economy. Jagex’s admission that it missed the mark suggests that pushing ahead could have damaged trust; using the release slot for broader improvements and a free trial may offer a less divisive way to attract new and returning players.
The case against
A separate character type and economy could have given newcomers and returning players a fresh way into RuneScape without changing the experience of existing characters. Cancelling it after negative reactions may forgo that opportunity, while the replacement updates and limited free trial may not provide the same distinct starting point or lasting route to grow the player base.
