Steam adds grouped achievements for base games and downloadable content

The Verge ·

Valve is adding “achievement sets” to Steam, allowing developers to organise achievements into separate groups for a base game and its downloadable content. The change is intended to make progress easier to follow and help players find related achievements to pursue.

Each set has its own progress bar and awards a profile-visible trophy when completed. Developers can also archive seasonal sets, which could support time-limited events; Valve says a selection of games already supports the feature, and a refreshed achievements page is available in the latest Steam client beta.

  • Steam achievements can now be grouped into developer-created sets.
  • Completed sets earn trophies visible on players’ profiles.
  • The feature is in the latest Steam client beta.

Steam is a digital shop and software service for PC games, run by Valve. Many games on the service award achievements for completing tasks, such as finishing a level or finding hidden items; players can display these on their profiles.

Some games also have downloadable content, or DLC: extra material released after the main game, sometimes for a fee. Grouping achievements by the main game and its add-ons can help players see which tasks belong together, while separate completion trophies offer another way to show progress. Seasonal content can be available for a limited time, so archiving its achievement set can keep older event goals distinct from current ones.
