What is behind the success of dark skies festival?

BBC Science ·

The Exmoor Dark Skies Festival returns from 16 October to 1 November 2026, marking its tenth anniversary with events across the national park and nearby communities. It celebrates Exmoor’s dark, clear skies and Dark Sky Reserve status, while helping attract visitors and support local businesses late in the tourism season.

Around 80 events include astronomy sessions, moonlit swimming, bioluminescence walks and planetarium shows. Exmoor was recognised as a Dark Sky Reserve in 2011, and organisers say low light pollution makes it possible to see stars and the Milky Way clearly. The festival has grown in popularity, with some events selling out before it opens and local hotels reporting repeat visitors.
