Hull teenager pursues sumo dream after moving to Tokyo
Nicholas Tarasenko, a 17-year-old from Hull, has moved to Tokyo to pursue a career in professional sumo, with the ambition of becoming world champion. His training master says he has the potential to reach yokozuna, the sport’s highest rank, after Nicholas gave up a promising judo path to start again in sumo.
He wakes at 5am, eats about 5,000 calories a day and aims to increase his weight from 134kg to 150kg. As the academy’s lowest-ranked wrestler, he also does chores for senior wrestlers and speaks to his family once a week. He made his sumo debut in Nagoya just before turning 15, winning four of seven matches, and hopes to reach the sport’s top two divisions, a progression that typically takes three to four years.
