Tom Arnold Denies Chuck Lorre’s Claim That He Made Writers Put His Name On ‘Roseanne’ Scripts: “Never”

Deadline ·

Tom Arnold has denied Chuck Lorre’s account that writers on *Roseanne* were told to put Arnold’s name on scripts he had not written. Arnold said he never would claim authorship of someone else’s work, and described his role as sharing ideas with Roseanne before the writers’ room developed them. The dispute adds a conflicting account to Lorre’s memoir about how writing credit was handled on the sitcom.

Arnold said scripts reflected contributions from writers across the room, including those brought in to sharpen jokes. He was a producer on seasons 3 to 6 and said he asked Lorre, who led the writers, to ensure every writer received a script credit each year. Arnold recalled asking Lorre to put Joel Madison’s name on a script when Madison had not received one; Lorre’s memoir, however, says staff writers were repeatedly ordered to put Arnold’s name on scripts he had not written, an account writer Danny Jacobson backed.

  • Tom Arnold says he never claimed credit for scripts he did not write.
  • He says he urged Chuck Lorre to give writers script credits.
  • Lorre’s memoir and writer Danny Jacobson offer a different account.
