Mississippi neighbour pulls unconscious boy from burning home wreckage

Daily Mail ·

Neighbours and first responders rescued six children from a house fire in Edwards, Mississippi, after it broke out at about 10pm on 7 October. Neighbour Kennard Hodge dug through burning wreckage with his bare hands to reach an unconscious four-year-old boy, whose rescue was captured on a deputy’s body camera.

Deputies gave the boy CPR and oxygen, and he began breathing before being taken to hospital with burns; his condition was described as very critical the following day, with no later update reported. The other five children, aged 13, nine, three and two, were rescued by neighbours, while the fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Edwards is a small community in Mississippi, in the southern United States. House fires can spread quickly, putting children and others inside at risk and making rescue efforts dangerous.

Neighbours and first responders are often among the first to help before people can be taken to hospital. Fire investigators examine the scene to establish how a blaze began; until that work is complete, its cause may be unknown.
