‘Oz’ Creator Tom Fontana to Showrun Vatican Drama Series Based on ‘The Devil’s Business’ Book as Fabel Entertainment Scores Rights (EXCLUSIVE)

Tom Fontana, creator of “Oz”, will create and showrun a Vatican drama based on Emanuele Midolo’s forthcoming book, “The Devil’s Business”. The series matters for its account of Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, whose rise through the Church’s ranks placed him at the centre of Vatican power and financial scandals in the 1980s.

The story will trace Marcinkus from serving as Pope Paul VI’s unofficial bodyguard to leading Vatican finances. The book is due from Century in June 2028; Fabel Entertainment secured the rights and will develop and produce the series with Italy-based Picomedia, a Fremantle company. Midolo is an investigations correspondent at The Sunday Times, and Fontana has also worked on “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Borgia”.
