Some Google Home Speakers caught downloading hundreds of gigs of data

The Verge ·

Some Google Home Speaker owners have reported their devices repeatedly downloading large amounts of data in the background, apparently because a firmware update is not installing correctly. Google says a fix is rolling out, and the issue matters because it could consume users’ home internet allowances without their noticing.

One Reddit user reported more than 200GB of data use in a day. Another affected speaker reportedly used 132GB in a month, while a different device used 2GB over the same period; most reports concern the newer Google Home Speaker, but the scale of the problem is unclear.
