Government approves drilling in Jackdaw gas field in North Sea

Developing story first seen 2 hours ago

The Independent ·

The government has approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, saying it will help provide homegrown gas this winter and protect jobs. The decision has renewed criticism from environmental groups, who say the project will worsen climate change without lowering energy bills or strengthening energy security.

Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh approved the project after public consultations closed in August. Owner Adura says Jackdaw could supply about 6 per cent of UK North Sea gas production, while Greenpeace UK says it would create 27 full-time jobs. The project was licensed in 2022, but that approval was overturned following a legal challenge; a decision on the separate Rosebank oil field is still pending.
