Politics latest: Burnham under pressure to approve Rosebank oil field after green light for Jackdaw drilling

The Independent ·

Ministers have approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, prompting calls for Andy Burnham to approve Rosebank, another major project. The decision matters because it has renewed debate over energy security and jobs, alongside Labour’s climate commitments.

Rosebank is described as the North Sea’s largest untapped oil field; both projects had earlier approvals overturned by Scottish courts after environmental challenges. Jackdaw operator Adura says Rosebank deserves the same evidence-based consideration, while Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay wants a swift approval. Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said a decision will take longer; climate groups oppose new drilling, while Octopus Energy chief Greg Jackson said Jackdaw could reduce imported gas shipments by about 10 per cent but would not lower gas prices.

  • Ministers approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field.
  • Adura and Scottish Conservatives want Rosebank approved next.
  • Climate groups say further drilling undermines Labour’s climate credibility.
