Former McDonald’s exec spills the beans on why healthier menu favorite got the axe
A former McDonald’s culinary innovation manager says the chain dropped its grilled chicken sandwich in 2020 because too few customers bought it to justify the cost and kitchen space. McDonald’s is now considering expanding its chicken menu, including grilled sandwiches and wraps, as demand for protein options grows.
The sandwich first appeared in 1993 and was revamped in 2015, but its sales did not meet the threshold needed to keep it profitable. Former manager Mike Haracz also cited its flavour, the risk of food waste and the possibility that it could take sales from other chicken items. He says a return is possible as chains look to chicken as a more affordable option amid rising beef prices, though he is unsure whether grilled chicken will make a comeback.
