In 1997, Dave Grohl met his musical soulmate. Now, he calls it “love at first sight”
Dave Grohl says meeting Taylor Hawkins was “love at first sight”, describing an immediate bond that shaped their friendship and musical partnership in Foo Fighters. Their connection mattered to Grohl as he built the band after Nirvana, finding a drummer who could match his energy and help bring the songs to life.
Hawkins was touring with Alanis Morissette when they met, while Grohl was looking for a new drummer after recording much of Foo Fighters’ second album, *The Colour and the Shape*, himself. Grohl called Hawkins his brother and best friend, and says their bond endured until Hawkins’s death; Foo Fighters now perform with Ilan Rubin, while keeping Hawkins’s drum-head logo onstage.
