US-led talks offer scant evidence Ukraine peace is near

BBC World ·

Two days of US-led diplomacy involving Ukrainian, European and Russian representatives have produced little sign that a peace deal is near. A proposed summit between Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin has not gained traction, while Putin appears to face limited pressure to end the war.

In Oslo, talks were described as “good and constructive”, but Putin’s foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said they offered little useful for resolving the conflict. The Kremlin says it may resume technical-level talks in Abu Dhabi next month; meanwhile, Trump has paused some sanctions on Moscow and agreed to buy Russian diesel. Putin may meet Trump and China’s Xi Jinping at an Apec summit in China next month, a prospect that could put him at the centre of global diplomacy.
