GM pledges wider autonomous driving support across its vehicle range

Ars Technica ·

General Motors says it remains committed to electric vehicles and autonomous driving, despite concerns that the US market may be losing momentum. At its GM Forward event, the company announced plans to expand hands-off, eyes-off Super Cruise to nearly its entire vehicle range, including pickups and crossovers.

GM says it is testing the technology for about 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometres) each month in virtual and real-world settings. Executives also described OnStar AI features that could explain vehicle alerts, learn drivers’ routines and offer help such as arranging a takeaway pick-up. Some processing would happen in the car, while cloud services could support features such as warnings about hazardous road conditions; GM says customer trust will be essential.

In short

  • GM plans to bring Super Cruise to nearly every vehicle.
  • OnStar AI could explain alerts and help with everyday tasks.
  • The company says trust is central to its plans.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Expanding hands-off, eyes-off driving support could make long journeys less tiring and bring advanced driver assistance to more people across GM’s range. GM’s reported testing and proposed mix of in-car and cloud processing may help improve the technology and offer useful, personalised services, provided the company earns drivers’ trust.

The case against

Wider deployment raises questions about whether the technology can reliably handle varied road conditions and whether drivers may become less attentive when a system takes over more of the driving task. Connected AI features also bring privacy and security concerns, while GM’s investment in these systems may be questioned if demand for electric vehicles and autonomous driving is uncertain.
