BioWare’s cancelled Mass Effect game would’ve learned from Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Witcher to deliver “a level of autonomy and choice that no other game has”

Eurogamer ·

A cancelled BioWare Mass Effect project was intended to offer unusually broad player freedom and choices that meaningfully affected the game. Veteran developer Tony de Waal said the team was drawing inspiration from recent work by Larian and CD Projekt while aiming to stay true to the original trilogy.

The project was in pre-production when EA closed BioWare, affecting around 50 staff. De Waal did not share examples of the planned features, and the game’s direction remains unknown. EA’s $55 billion sale had recently been approved, clearing the way for cuts; the closure also raises questions about the company’s future commitment to deep role-playing games.

In short

  • BioWare’s cancelled Mass Effect aimed for exceptional player choice.
  • About 50 staff were affected by the studio closure.
  • The team took inspiration from Larian and CD Projekt.
