Stepfather jailed for life for murdering student in her university halls
Nathan Owens has been jailed for life for murdering his 19-year-old stepdaughter, Carla Georgescu, at her university accommodation in Preston. He must serve at least 35 years before he can be considered for parole. The case has highlighted the danger Carla faced from someone within her family, as well as the future and plans cut short by her death.
The court heard that Owens drove about 100 miles to Carla’s accommodation in the early hours of 4 February, the day before she was due to travel to Romania to meet someone she had met online. Prosecutors said he was motivated by sexual jealousy; he had previously pleaded guilty to making indecent images of Carla. CCTV and car GPS evidence contradicted his account of the journey, and investigators said he stopped to dispose of evidence. Carla was studying clinical psychology and hoped to pursue postgraduate studies in Romania.
