Sony Doubles Down on Officially Ditching Physical Media

Polygon ·

Sony appears to be winding down its standalone UHD Blu-ray player business in Japan, where its online store says the UBP-X700/K is out of stock and will not be restocked. The move would leave the disc-equipped PlayStation 5 as the company’s only 4K Blu-ray player there, adding to concerns that physical media is becoming harder to buy and keep.

The UBP-X700/K, released in May 2025, was Sony’s last standalone UHD Blu-ray player after it discontinued the UBP-X800M2. The PS5 can play UHD Blu-ray discs but does not support Dolby Vision; Sony will still sell a standard Blu-ray player and a DVD player. Sony has not confirmed plans for other regions, though changes in Japan often come first. The company also plans to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs from 2028, while digital purchases can depend on licences and services that may later be withdrawn.

In short

  • Sony is reportedly ending UHD Blu-ray player sales in Japan.
  • The PS5 would be Sony’s only 4K disc player there.
  • PlayStation physical game disc production is due to end in 2028.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Sony’s move may reflect a reasonable response to declining demand as viewers increasingly choose streaming and digital purchases, while keeping the disc-equipped PS5 available in Japan preserves some access to UHD Blu-ray. Focusing on fewer products could also help the company manage costs and invest in services customers use more often.

The case against

Standalone UHD Blu-ray players offer features the PS5 lacks, such as Dolby Vision, and serve people who value high-quality playback, ownership and access without relying on an internet connection or a continuing licence. If physical options keep shrinking, consumers may have less control over films and games they have paid for, especially when digital services change or withdraw access.
