A stunt fall during the filming of *The Dark Knight Rises* left the set shaken, with Matthew Modine recalling that director Christopher Nolan’s face went white. The incident shows the physical risks involved in practical filmmaking and why Nolan decided not to include the footage.

Modine said his stunt double was pulled into the air and dropped about 15 feet onto a cobbled street near the New York Stock Exchange. The impact sounded “sickening”, he recalled, and Nolan said the scene would have earned an NC-17 rating because of its violence. Modine played police officer Peter Foley, whose on-screen death was ultimately handled without showing the full impact.
