SAG-AFTRA Votes To Extend Duncan Crabtree-Ireland’s Contract With Updated Title
SAG-AFTRA’s National Board has voted to extend National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland’s contract through 20 June 2032 and add “CEO” to his title. The change recognises the range of his responsibilities, including leading staff and serving as the union’s chief negotiator, at a time of uncertainty in Hollywood.
The extension passed with 98.34% support at a Saturday meeting; his previous contract was due to expire on 21 June 2028. The agreement’s terms were not disclosed. Crabtree-Ireland negotiated the union’s four-year deal with the AMPTP in May, while SAG-AFTRA leadership has opposed the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros.
In short
- Crabtree-Ireland’s contract runs through June 2032.
- SAG-AFTRA added CEO to his title.
- The extension received 98.34% support.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Supporters could argue that extending Crabtree-Ireland’s contract gives SAG-AFTRA continuity and experienced leadership through a period of uncertainty in Hollywood. Adding “CEO” may also accurately reflect his broad responsibilities, including managing staff and leading negotiations, while the strong board support signals confidence in his work.
The case against
Critics could argue that a contract extension lasting until 2032 limits the union’s ability to reassess its leadership as industry conditions and members’ priorities change. With the terms undisclosed, members may also reasonably seek more transparency about the agreement and whether the title change strengthens executive authority or accountability.
