Explained simply

New York City Ballet is a major American dance company founded by choreographer George Balanchine and others in 1948. Balanchine helped shape its style and repertory, and his influence remains part of the company’s history.

The New York Choreographic Institute is linked to the company and gives choreographers time to develop new work with dancers. Its two-week residencies offer a view of how ideas for ballets are explored and rehearsed before they reach the stage.

The film follows four choreographers in those residencies and includes established artists discussing their creative practice. Adrian Danchig-Waring, the Institute’s artistic director and a longtime NYCB dancer, also reflects on the institution as he prepares to leave the company after more than 24 years.
