Baby-masked killer’s grip on screenwriter fuels uneven meta-horror slasher

The Guardian ·

Big Baby is a meta-horror slasher about screenwriter Adam Lewis, whose dreams and visions of a baby-masked killer begin to blur with reality. The film has flashes of promise and a strong central performance, but its focus on Adam’s anxieties and an unappealing portrayal of him make it difficult to care about the characters’ fate.

Brandon Scott plays Adam, who hopes to build a career like Jordan Peele’s while worrying about critics and aspiring to win an Academy Award. Krsy Fox plays his supportive girlfriend, who the review says is thinly drawn; the dialogue-free scenes give Scott room to shine, but the script’s character work slows the film. Big Baby begins streaming on Shudder and AMC+ on 30 October.

In short

  • A screenwriter’s nightmares blur with reality in a meta-slasher.
  • Brandon Scott gives a strong performance as Adam.
  • The film’s thin characters weaken its horror.
