Roblox users have made playable version of Counter-Strike and full, working versions PlayStation games that you can play right now

Eurogamer ·

Roblox users have created playable recreations of Counter-Strike and several games accessible through a working PlayStation 4-style dashboard. The projects were made by Roblox users rather than the original rights holders, raising questions about unauthorised copies of commercial games on the platform.

The Counter-Strike-inspired experience by Takeoff Interactive includes the familiar two-team bomb-defusal mode and is described as a non-monetised passion project. A separate PlayStation Experience by Redwing Works includes a dashboard, chat and seven games: The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Cluster Truck, Superhot, Gang Beasts, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Undertale and PaRappa the Rapper. Reviewers found several recreations closely resembled their originals, though with some differences; Sony and the developers had been contacted for comment.

In short

  • Roblox users made close recreations of well-known games.
  • A PlayStation-style dashboard offers seven playable titles.
  • The original creators were not involved.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

These projects can be seen as creative fan works that let people experiment with game design, share nostalgia and introduce familiar styles of play to a new audience. If they are non-monetised and meaningfully reworked, supporters may argue that they offer community value while causing little harm, and that platform rules should distinguish them from commercial counterfeits.

The case against

The rights holders have invested in creating and selling these games, and close, playable copies may use their characters, designs and other protected material without permission. Even when creators do not charge, such projects could divert players from authorised releases, confuse users about who made or endorsed them, and make it harder for developers to protect their work.

Explained simply

Roblox is an online platform where users can create and play games made by others. Counter-Strike is a long-running series of team-based shooting games, while PlayStation is Sony’s video-game console brand; the games named in the report were originally released for other platforms.

The recreations were made by Roblox users, not by the companies that own the original games. Making a game available to play on Roblox does not by itself show that its creators have permission to use another game’s characters, designs or ideas.

The issue matters to game makers and platform operators because recreations can raise questions about copyright and how user-made content is monitored. It also concerns players, who may encounter unofficial versions alongside games made for Roblox.
