Captain Xhaka allowed to play for Switzerland again
Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo will be eligible for Switzerland again in November after an investigation into their use of forged Covid-19 vaccination certificates. Xhaka missed three Nations League matches in October, while Embolo was left out of the squad in September; their return comes as Switzerland prepare for their final two group fixtures.
Both players were fined 150,000 Swiss francs each, suspended for two years provided they commit no further offences. The Swiss Football Association said it considered the cases, completed legal proceedings and sporting consequences in deciding their return was appropriate. Xhaka remains captain for now, but coach Murat Yakin has the final say and will name his squad on 5 November; Switzerland lead Group E.
In short
- Xhaka and Embolo can return to Switzerland’s squad in November.
- Each received a suspended 150,000 Swiss franc fine.
- Coach Yakin will decide whether Xhaka keeps the captaincy.
