Moment tornado strikes in Turkish holiday hotspot, killing at least four

Daily Mail ·

A tornado struck a construction site in Kepez, in Turkey’s Antalya province, on Tuesday, killing four workers and damaging their accommodation and a crane. The deaths highlight the danger of severe storms in a region better known as a Mediterranean holiday destination, although deadly tornadoes there are rare.

Three of the workers who died were Syrian nationals, according to district governor Hulusi Sahin; another worker was injured. The tornado followed a warning of heavy rain and was described by Sahin as exceptionally localised, with no damage reported elsewhere in Kepez or Antalya. The article also notes recent deadly flooding in Istanbul and Spain, and says human-driven climate change is making extreme weather more frequent and destructive.

In short

  • A tornado killed four workers at a construction site in Antalya.
  • Three of the dead were Syrian nationals.
