ZacOS 9 and Mavernix: Two classic Apple desktops find their Wayland to Linux
Two new, independent projects bring classic Macintosh-inspired desktops to Linux, offering a choice between the Platinum look of Mac OS 8 and 9 and the Aqua style of OS X Mavericks. They show continued interest in older Mac interfaces and provide alternatives to theming existing Linux desktops.
ZacOS 9 is a Wayland-based environment created by Adam Lawson with help from Claude and Copilot. It includes a window manager, file browser, global menu bar and other utilities, can connect with Macs, and works with the SheepShaver emulator to run classic Mac software; downloads include a preinstalled Debian image or smaller Debian packages. The article also introduces Mavernix, inspired by Mavericks, and notes earlier Mac-like Linux projects and Xfce themes.
In short
- ZacOS 9 recreates the Platinum Mac OS 8 and 9 look on Linux.
