KATSEYE, MAZZEL Producer Taka Perry Talks Career From Sydney to Tokyo & Appeal of Japanese Music: Unbound Japan Interview

Billboard ·

Taka Perry, an Australian-born producer with Japanese and American heritage, has built a career across Australia and Japan. He co-wrote and produced KATSEYE’s 2024 hit “Touch”, and says moving to Japan gave him the chance to work in a music scene he already understood through language and culture.

Perry began making music in Canberra, teaching himself instruments and production before moving to Sydney after high school. After four or five years of success in Australia, he began travelling to Japan for sessions around 2019–20; as Japanese work grew, he moved his base there last year. He says his Australian credits did not readily translate in Japan, so he and his management had to rebuild his career from scratch, without a publisher.

In short

  • Taka Perry produced KATSEYE’s 2024 hit “Touch”.
  • He moved from Australia to Japan as work there grew.
  • He says establishing himself in Japan meant rebuilding his career.
