Prison psychologist jailed for affair with lifer and smuggling contraband
A prison psychologist has been jailed for 28 months after having a sexual relationship with a life-sentenced prisoner and conspiring with him to smuggle contraband into HMP Swinfen Hall. The judge said her actions were a gross breach of trust that damaged confidence in the prison service and risked creating an unsafe environment.
Dr Amber-Renee Gayle, 32, and Rickcarlo Williams, 24, exchanged more than 12,000 messages over six months in 2024. Prosecutors said they smuggled an estimated 35 phones and other equipment, hidden in items including a hollowed-out dictionary and food and drink tins, and may have made up to £9,550. Gayle also used prison records to obtain information and warned Williams about cell checks; he was ordered to serve a further 14 months from when he becomes eligible for parole.
