Moment road rage taxi driver swaps punches with driver and then rams into him – all because he missed a green light

Daily Mail ·

A Liverpool taxi driver chased and rammed another motorist’s car after a confrontation over a missed green light, in an incident captured on the taxi’s dashcam. Hawkar Karimi, 37, admitted dangerous driving and was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court; the judge called his driving disgraceful.

The court heard Karimi had honked because he believed the other driver was using a mobile phone. After the men exchanged punches on Wavertree Road, Karimi pursued the motorist for about a minute at up to 40mph, ran a red light and hit the Volkswagen three times, pushing it into a wall. He received a 12-month suspended prison sentence, 100 hours of unpaid work, a 12-month probation requirement, a 30-month driving ban and a £187 surcharge.

Explained simply

Dangerous driving is a criminal offence in England and Wales when someone’s driving falls far below the standard expected of a careful driver and creates a risk of serious harm. Courts can impose prison sentences, driving bans and other penalties, depending on the circumstances.

Liverpool is a city in north-west England, and Wavertree Road is one of its urban roads, where drivers share space with pedestrians and other traffic. Dashcam footage can record events from a vehicle and may be used as evidence in court.

A suspended prison sentence means the person does not go to prison unless they break the sentence’s conditions or commit another offence during a set period. Unpaid work, probation and a driving ban are separate parts of a court sentence.
