Russian drone attack at Dnipro station kills 13 passengers on platform

Daily Mail ·

A Russian drone struck a platform at Dnipro railway station in central Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least 13 passengers and wounding five. President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the United States and Europe to respond to what he described as an escalation, as the attack hit a key transport network.

Ukrainian Railways said the jet-powered drone hit the platform where train No. 866, travelling from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia, was standing. The rail operator had announced an elevated threat level, but many people remained on the platform. Train services have faced repeated drone threats since Russia’s 2022 invasion; in September, passengers were evacuated from more than 5,800 services.

Explained simply

Dnipro is a major city in central Ukraine, and its railway station links the region to other parts of the country. Trains remain important for travel and transport during Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in 2022.

Russia and Ukraine have fought since Russia seized Crimea in 2014 and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine; Russia widened the war with its invasion in 2022. Ukrainian Railways runs the country’s passenger trains, while President Volodymyr Zelensky leads Ukraine’s government. Attacks and threats to rail services affect people travelling as well as a network used to move supplies.
