THE POWER OF 3, Featuring ORIANTHI, CINDY BLACKMAN SANTANA And RHONDA SMITH, Shares New Single Built Around Previously Unreleased JIMI HENDRIX Riff
The Power of 3 have released “Taxi”, a new single built around a previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix guitar riff. Orianthi found the riff while exploring Hendrix’s archives with producer Eddie Kramer, then brought it to drummer Cindy Blackman Santana and bassist Rhonda Smith, who developed a new song around it. The trio say the track honours Hendrix while creating something of their own.
“Taxi” follows the group’s debut double single and will feature on their self-titled debut album, due on 11 December through She2Music. Produced by Kramer and recorded entirely in analogue, the album will also feature Carlos Santana. The trio was formed after Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis encouraged Orianthi to assemble a power trio inspired by Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys; they have since performed twice at Allegiant Stadium.

Explained simply
Jimi Hendrix was an influential guitarist whose recordings and unfinished musical ideas remain in archives. Eddie Kramer, a producer and recording engineer, worked closely with Hendrix and has helped preserve and explore his music. A guitar riff is a short, recurring musical phrase that can form the basis of a song.
The Power of 3 is a band featuring guitarist Orianthi, drummer Cindy Blackman Santana and bassist Rhonda Smith. The group draws inspiration from Band of Gypsys, a trio Hendrix formed in 1969 with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles. Its music paired Hendrix’s guitar with a rhythm section, a format that The Power of 3 also uses.
The group’s debut album is scheduled for release through She2Music and will include Carlos Santana, a guitarist known for blending rock with other musical styles. Mark Davis, owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, encouraged Orianthi to form the trio, which has performed at the team’s Allegiant Stadium.
