AO3 maintenance outage could last up to four weeks, operator says

Engadget ·

The Archive of Our Own (AO3) fan-fiction site has been taken offline for maintenance, and its operator now estimates restoration could take around two weeks, or as long as four. The extended outage affects a major online home for readers and writers, though the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) says the site’s data is intact.

AO3 was initially expected to be down for 12 hours after the outage began just after 3am ET. The OTW hopes to restore limited service sooner, but warns that temporary shutdowns may still be needed; the cause has not been disclosed. Recent problems with notifications, search, history and listings were logged, while possible security vulnerabilities have not been identified as the cause. OTW’s engineers are volunteers, which may affect how quickly repairs can be completed.

In short

  • AO3 may take two to four weeks to fully return.
  • The OTW says the site’s data is intact.
  • The cause of the outage remains unknown.

Explained simply

Archive of Our Own, usually called AO3, is a website where people publish and read fan fiction: stories inspired by existing books, films, television programmes and other works. It is run by the Organization for Transformative Works, a non-profit organisation that also works to preserve and document fan-created works.

AO3 is used by readers and writers around the world, and its archive contains stories, comments and other contributions built up over many years. The organisation says the site’s data remains intact, while its volunteer engineers maintain and repair the service.

When AO3 is unavailable, people cannot use its usual reading and writing features, and some may also lose access to saved works or account tools until service returns. The site’s scale and reliance on volunteer-run technical work help explain why maintenance can affect a large community and take time.
