Rian Johnson Commissions ‘Knives Out’ Cinematographer For Curated RAW Camera App: “The Same Image Processing We Use”

Deadline ·

Rian Johnson has launched Chromagraph Camera, an iPhone photography app developed with his long-time cinematographer Steve Yedlin. It applies the image processing they use on films including *Brick*, *The Last Jedi* and the *Knives Out* series, offering users a curated version of their shared visual style.

The app shoots RAW and bypasses the iPhone’s usual image processing, with controls for colour, exposure, grain and halation; photos can be exported to the camera roll. It currently takes still photographs only, and Yedlin says it is not intended to replace Apple’s Camera app or provide all the control of a professional camera. His latest collaboration with Johnson was *Wake Up Dead Man*, the third *Knives Out* film.

In short

  • Rian Johnson and Steve Yedlin made an iPhone camera app.
  • It uses image processing developed for their films.
  • The app shoots stills, with no video yet.

Explained simply

Rian Johnson is a film director, and Steve Yedlin is a cinematographer, the person responsible for how a film is lit and photographed. They have worked together on films including the Knives Out series, developing a recognisable approach to colour and image texture.

Most iPhones automatically process photos to adjust their appearance. Chromagraph Camera instead captures RAW images, which retain more of the original visual information, and applies image processing chosen by Johnson and Yedlin. Its controls let users adjust elements such as colour, exposure and grain, while keeping the pair’s film work as the reference point.

The app is for still photographs and exports images to the iPhone camera roll. Its creators describe it as a curated option rather than a replacement for Apple’s Camera app or a professional camera.
