In 2018, Jack Lowden was thinking about quitting acting. Watching Saoirse Ronan changed his mind
Jack Lowden has said he considered leaving acting at 27, despite a run of high-profile roles, because he felt uncomfortable with the public persona and uncertain about his place in the profession. Watching Saoirse Ronan lead the 2018 film *Mary, Queen of Scots* helped change his mind: he found her ease and confidence on set inspiring, and decided he wanted to keep acting.
Lowden played Lord Darnley opposite Ronan, and the two began dating during production; they married in 2024 and had their first child in 2025. Before the film, Lowden had appeared in *Wolf Hall*, *War & Peace*, *England Is Mine* and *Dunkirk*, while his theatre work included an Olivier Award-winning role in *Ghosts*. He has said he still feels most at home on stage, where rehearsals give him more time to develop a part.
In short
- Lowden considered quitting acting at 27.
- Watching Saoirse Ronan on set inspired him to stay.
- The pair later married and had a child.
