Trump’s Iowa nightmare becomes reality as Republican Ashley Hinson loses to Paralympic champion Josh Turek in another flip for Democrats
Democrat Josh Turek has defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa’s Senate race, flipping a Republican-held seat and dealing a setback to President Donald Trump and the GOP’s effort to retain control of the Senate. The contest was expected to favour Republicans, but economic concerns and a strong Democratic year helped make it competitive.
Turek, a Paralympic champion and Iowa state representative, criticised Hinson over her votes on tariffs and the Iran war, pointing to higher fuel and farm costs. More than $90 million was spent on advertising through September, making it the sixth most expensive Senate race. Hinson had pledged to be Trump’s strongest ally, while Republicans criticised Turek’s attendance record in the Iowa House.
