West Ham confirm Parker as boss
West Ham United have appointed former midfielder Scott Parker as head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo after a poor start to their Championship campaign. Parker has guided Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion from the division, and West Ham hope he can lead them back to the Premier League.
Parker takes charge for the first time on Wednesday away to Cardiff City, with Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine among his assistants. West Ham are eighth, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough, after losing their last two home games; they have won two of their past six. The club raised about £150m from summer player sales and spent a reported £22m on Arne Engels, a Championship record fee.
In short
- Scott Parker returns to West Ham as head coach.
- He has a two-and-a-half-year contract.
- West Ham sit eighth, six points off the top.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Appointing Parker gives West Ham a manager with a strong record of winning promotion from the Championship, making him a credible choice for a club aiming to return to the Premier League. A two-and-a-half-year contract offers time to build a team, and the club’s substantial summer sales and record signing may give him resources to improve results.
The case against
Parker’s past promotions do not guarantee success at West Ham, and changing head coach after a poor start may not address deeper problems in the squad or the club’s approach. With the side already six points off the lead and having lost its last two home games, the appointment carries real risk if results do not improve quickly.
Explained simply
West Ham United are a London football club who have spent much of their recent history in the Premier League, England’s top division. They are now competing in the Championship, the second tier, where clubs aim to win promotion back to the Premier League.
Scott Parker is a former West Ham midfielder who has also managed Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley. Each of those clubs won promotion from the Championship under him, giving him experience of the division and the challenge of taking a team up.
West Ham’s squad changed significantly during the summer, with the club selling several players and bringing in new ones. Their results matter because promotion would restore their place in the top division, while the Championship’s long season makes consistency important.
