Fonseca leaves Lyon to become Sporting coach
Paulo Fonseca has left Olympique Lyonnais to become manager of Sporting, ending his spell at the French club after more than a year and a half. The move gives Sporting a new coach during the season, while Lyon must replace a manager who had led them to third place in Ligue 1.
The 53-year-old Portuguese succeeds Rui Borges, whose contract Sporting had begun discussions to terminate. Lyon said Sporting would pay a €5 million fee and expressed regret at the timing of Fonseca’s unexpected departure. Lyon assistant Jorge Maciel will take over on an interim basis; Sporting are third in Liga Portugal and sixth in the Champions League standings, while Lyon are 12th in the Europa League.
In short
- Paulo Fonseca leaves Lyon to manage Sporting.
- Sporting will pay Lyon a €5 million fee.
- Jorge Maciel takes charge of Lyon on an interim basis.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Sporting can argue that appointing Fonseca gives the club an experienced coach who may strengthen its prospects in domestic and European competition, and that acting during the season is justified if it believes a change can improve results. Paying Lyon the agreed €5 million fee provides compensation for the disruption.
The case against
Lyon can argue that losing a manager who had guided the team to third in Ligue 1, especially unexpectedly during the season, risks undermining continuity and weakening its campaign. Sporting’s move also raises a fair question about whether replacing Rui Borges before the season is over is worth the disruption to its own team.
