More than 900 academics urge UK to reverse decision to bar Andreas Malm
More than 1,400 academics from over 250 institutions have signed a letter urging the UK government to reverse its decision to block Swedish climate scholar Andreas Malm from entering the country. They say the decision threatens academic freedom and free expression by restricting scholars’ ability to travel and debate politically contentious issues.
Malm’s electronic travel authorisation was revoked last week, preventing him from attending a conference, appearing on the BBC and joining a public discussion with Huda Ammori, co-founder of proscribed group Palestine Action. Malm said he did not know the authorities’ reasons and suspected his planned appearance with Ammori was a factor. The Home Office said ETAs may be refused for several reasons, including public safety concerns, and that he could apply for a visa.
