Zverev’s first match as world number one ended in a defeat, with Lorenzo Musetti beating him 7-6(5), 6-2 in the Paris Masters round of 32. The upset adds to a difficult spell for Zverev, who had lost in the Vienna Open semi-finals days earlier.

World number 24 Musetti won six of the final seven points in the first-set tie-break, then broke twice in the second set. He hit 29 winners and eight aces in the one-hour, 40-minute match, improving his record against Zverev to 4-2. The victory continues Musetti’s return to form after an injury-hit season and a title in Lyon last month.
