Top House Progressive Wants To Make AI Scrutiny A Top Priority In Democratic House
Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar wants the incoming Democratic House majority to make AI oversight a priority, including compelling technology executives to testify under oath and advancing safety legislation. His proposal reflects concerns that AI could affect jobs and personal freedoms, as well as voter resistance to nearby data centres.
Early CNN exit polling found roughly two-thirds of voters opposed data-centre construction in their neighbourhoods, while 43 per cent trusted neither party to handle AI. Casar and Senator Bernie Sanders proposed a bill in September to pause frontier AI development until a new federal department could regulate it; other Democrats are also developing AI policy proposals. President Donald Trump has signalled he may veto Democratic initiatives.
In short
- Greg Casar wants AI leaders called to testify.
