Bluetooth 7.0 optional feature raises LE data rate to 7.5 Mbps
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has adopted High Data Throughput (HDT) as an optional feature in Bluetooth Core 7.0. It raises Bluetooth LE’s maximum data rate from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps, potentially enabling higher-quality wireless audio and more reliable connections.
Wireless audio is expected to be the main early use, with compatible devices anticipated in 2027. The higher rate could also help smartwatches transfer fitness data while using less radio time, support spatial computing devices without Wi-Fi, and speed up firmware updates.
In short
- Bluetooth LE’s maximum rate will rise to 7.5 Mbps.
- HDT could enable spatial and multi-channel audio.
- First compatible devices are expected in 2027.
